What:   Wilson Walk Workparty
When:   10:00 AM, Saturday, 03 July 2004
Where:   Wilson Walk (#96)
9 - 14 Wilson Circle
Berkeley, CA (map)
Description:

Bring workgloves if you have them, also picks would be helpful. Other things you could bring: a level, sledge hammer, flat-blade shovel, hoe.

We've already put in 28 steps on this path, and we are right on the steepest part, so there are lots more steps needed. Clearing of weeds and shrubbery is also required as we progress upwards. The view is wonderful from this path--it is a prime candidate for a bench once the steps are in.

Did we all really enjoy the last BPWA newsletter highlighting our work on building the paths, as well as our plans for more to come?? :-)

If you're coming on Saturday, could you drop me a reply so I have an idea of how many to plan for? Refreshments will be served, of course. And you can certainly show up even if you don't send a reply.

What: From (Space) Tower to Town
When:   10 AM, Saturday, 22 May 2004
Where:

Space Sciences Building (above Lawrence Hall of Science), off Centennial Drive
Berkeley, CA (map)

Description:
This is a preview of the walk I will be leading on May 22 titled "From (Space) Tower to Town".

It's a hill walk, starting at 10:00am at the UC Space Science Lab near Centennial and Grizzly Peak. It goes down through some beautiful and interesting neighborhoods with funky architecture to end at the foot of the Rose Walk, near the Rose Garden on Euclid. The walk will start at 10:00am in the Space Sciences parking lot.I'll give a short tour of the exhibits at the entrance of the Space Science Lab. Then we'll walk a little way down the Fire Trail to look at the satellite tracking antenna. We might see a satellite pass; can't guarantee it.We will then reverse course and go down the steps between the Space Sciences and Mathematical Sciences buildings. We get a spectacular view of the Bay.We'll visit the garden in back of Lawrence Hall of Science. Then we'll cross the LHS north parking lot and follow several paths to Harding Circle. From there, we'll follow mostly the downhill roads: Olympus Ave, Campus Drive. We'll look at Columbia Path and Glendale Path, which have been partly built over. The walk then descends to Glendale - La Loma Park, where we might see some archery practice. We exit the park via some steps onto Quarry Road, and then onto La Loma Ave. We turn off onto the Rose Steps which take us to Rose Street. We follow Rose Street down to the famous Rose Walk. The walk ends at the bus stop on Euclid, near the Rose Garden.

DirectionsYou can drive to the Space Sciences parking lot by going around to the East side of the UC campus and get on Centennial Drive. There's a sign for Space Sciences and Mathematical Sciences. The road goes around the back of the football stadium, where Centennial turns off. You drive several miles uphill, past the soccer field, the swimming pools, and the Botanical Gardens. You go past Lawrence Hall of Science too. Don't park in their lots unless you want to pay. You continue up the hill and just before Centennial joins Grizzly Peak, there's a road to the right, labeled "Gauss Way"; this leads into the Space Sciences parking lot, a dead end. On weekends, there's no charge for parking.Alternatively, you can park near the Rose Walk and ride the #65 bus from there up the hill. On weekends, the #65 runs hourly, starting on the half-hour from Center & Shattuck (Bank of America). Bus fare is $1.50 one-way.There's one catch: the bus doesn't go to Space Sciences Lab. You can either walk up the stairs to Space Sciences from the last stop at Lawrence Hall, or get off at Senior, and walk along Grizzly to the path which leads in to Space Sciences.Alternatively, you could skip the Space Science part of the walk and wait at Lawrence Hall for the rest of us to come down the steps at about 10:45.I plan to catch the 8:30 #65 at Center & Shattuck. I will walk in from Senior to meet the group at Space Sciences. If you are on that bus, I can guide you in from Senior. I'm the big guy with a red face, white shirt and black suspenders, and a billed cap marked "BUS RIDER".

For additional information, my phone is 510-913-4682 (email:stgeller@comcast.net). It's a cell phone; I'll have it with me on the day of the walk.
